Buying presents has never been something I find easy. I mean for anyone!

The one time i bought great gifts was really by accident, I was broke one Christmas and got my 2 nephews these tiny remote control cars. They are so small they sit in the palm of your hand. They were about $10 each and they went down an absolute storm!

The boys loved them, my brother in law who had spent a fortune on presents for them hated them of course..lol

Anyway that is my one resounding success with presents, apart from that it is strictlt flowers and scarves.

I am originally from the Uk but I now live in the states, Utah to be exact, and things are very different here.

Sure we all speak the same language (kind of) and most Americans seem to have been to the UK or have some relative from there. But I have never known religion to be such a huge factor in life in the UK.

My family are mostly Catholics, with a few protestants thrown in to make life more interesting. I worked in a large office and I have to say I really didn't ever know what religion people were. What is more I didn't really care.

Since moving to Utah I find that it is normally the 2nd or 3 question people ask me. It is usually quite subtle, maybe they ask me which ward i go to (a mormon question) or maybe they ask me if I go to the Church round the corner.

Christian Jewelry - these are the crosses I am looking at buying for one of my young relatives. I think they are unique gifts in that they are hand crafted rather than being mass made.

Her mum says I should buy something for her "bottom draw" but I think a set of Mahogany dining chairs as a present may just scare her off from ever getting married.

Should I ask about their religion before giving a silver cross to someone?

  • Yes - Best to check first before you offend
  • No - Buy it and they will be fine
  • No- It just opens up a can of worms

I haveĀ  never worried about religion before, well that isn't true. Coming from the UK I am quite aware of all the problems in northern ireland and how it was often associated with religion.

But never in my life have I had people ask me all about my religion within a few mins of meeting me.

Anyway all this preamble comes around to my question

Is it ok to give a silver cross, which may be considered to be religious jewelry to someone who you are unsure of their religious feelings?

I think it's interesting to see how different the states could be from other parts of Europe when it comes to religion. Personally, I live in Miami and no one really asks about our religion. They seem to care more about where you're family is from (Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba, etc.) It's probably just a regional thing but I would still ask about religion before buying a religious gift.
